Education first
A hyperbaric chamber is an enclosed environment where atmospheric pressure is increased above normal pressure. Under higher pressure, more oxygen can dissolve into blood plasma while you are inside.
There are two categories worth separating clearly. Clinical hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a supervised medical treatment delivered in hard-shell chambers at prescribed pressures with medical-grade oxygen. Portable mild hyperbaric chambers are lower-pressure systems used in wellness and home settings. They are related technologies — not medically identical ones.

How it works
You settle inside the chamber in comfortable clothing and it is sealed. Most people sit or lie down with something to read or listen to.
Filtered air raises internal pressure slowly. You may notice a gentle fullness in your ears, similar to an aircraft descending.
You rest at pressure for the session length set by the manufacturer's guidance or your healthcare professional, then the chamber depressurises gradually.

Real life
Consistency matters more than intensity. These are the everyday realities that decide whether a recovery routine actually happens.

Room to lie back, a clear window and steady airflow make sessions feel calm rather than clinical.

A chamber at home removes travel time, which is usually what makes a recovery routine stick.

Larger portable chambers offer interior space to sit upright, stretch out or share the session.
Recovery studios, sports facilities and wellness centres use portable chambers as part of a broader service menu alongside strength, mobility and recovery programming. Facility use should always follow manufacturer operating guidance and local regulations.
Lifestyle imagery on this page shows chamber use in a home context only and is not intended to suggest treatment of any medical condition.

Common questions
Every answer starts in plain English, then links to a deeper page.
A hyperbaric chamber is an enclosed environment in which air pressure is increased above normal atmospheric pressure. Clinical hard-shell chambers and portable soft-shell wellness chambers are both hyperbaric chambers, but they are not medically equivalent.
Read the full explainer →You enter the chamber, it is sealed, and a compressor gradually raises the internal air pressure. You rest at pressure for the session, then the chamber depressurises slowly.
See the three-step walkthrough →Yes. Portable chambers are designed for home and professional wellness environments, subject to space, power, local regulations and medical screening.
Home chamber guide →Chambers are used widely, and the most commonly reported issue is ear or sinus discomfort during pressure changes. Some medical conditions make pressure exposure inappropriate, so screening by a qualified healthcare professional matters most.
