How Hyperbaric Chambers Work
Compression, session and decompression explained in plain English — plus what the compressor, valves and filtration actually do while you rest inside.
The short answer
A hyperbaric chamber works by sealing you inside an enclosure and using a compressor to raise the internal air pressure above normal atmospheric pressure. You rest at that pressure for the session, then the chamber depressurises gradually. Higher pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into blood plasma while you are inside.

Step 1: enter the chamber
You get in wearing comfortable clothing, settle into a sitting or lying position, and the chamber is sealed — with a heavy-duty pressure zip on portable chambers, or an engineered door on hard-shell units.
Most people bring an audiobook, music or something to read. Follow the facility's or manufacturer's rules about which items may be taken inside, which exist for fire-safety reasons.
Step 2: the chamber gradually pressurizes
A compressor pushes filtered air into the sealed chamber. Internal pressure rises slowly over several minutes until it reaches the target level for that chamber.
This is when most people notice ear fullness, similar to an aircraft descending. Swallowing, yawning or gentle jaw movement normally clears it. Tell the operator if it does not.
Step 3: relax during your session
At pressure, you simply rest. Continuous airflow keeps the internal air fresh and prevents carbon dioxide accumulation.
Session length is set by the manufacturer's guidance in wellness settings, or by a clinician's prescription in clinical HBOT. Do not adopt a session length you found on social media.
Step 4: controlled decompression
Pressure is released gradually until the chamber returns to normal atmospheric pressure, then the chamber is opened. You may feel a mild ear sensation again.
Most people resume normal activity straight away. Report any pain, dizziness or persistent ear discomfort to a healthcare professional.
