ATA stands for atmospheres absolute. It is the unit used to describe total pressure inside a hyperbaric chamber, where 1 ATA equals normal air pressure at sea level. A chamber operating at 1.3 ATA is therefore at 1.3 times sea-level pressure.

Atmospheric pressure at sea level is defined as 1 ATA. Pressure increases with depth in water, and a hyperbaric chamber recreates a similar increase using compressed air.

Because ATA is an absolute measure, it always includes the surrounding atmospheric pressure rather than describing only the added pressure.
