How Does a Hyperbaric Chamber Work?

Compression, session time and decompression explained step by step, plus what the equipment actually does during a hyperbaric session.

The short answer

A hyperbaric chamber works by sealing you inside an enclosure and pumping filtered air in until internal pressure rises above normal atmospheric pressure. You stay at that pressure for the session length, then the chamber depressurises gradually. Higher pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into blood plasma while you are inside.

Step 1: entering and sealing the chamber

You enter the chamber and it is closed and sealed. Portable chambers use a heavy-duty zip system; hard-shell clinical chambers use an engineered door.

Most people wear comfortable clothing and bring something to read or listen to. Sessions are usually calm and quiet.

Step 2: gradual pressurisation

A compressor pushes filtered air into the sealed chamber, raising pressure slowly over several minutes. This is the phase in which you may feel fullness in the ears, similar to a plane descending or driving downhill.

Simple equalisation techniques such as swallowing, yawning or gentle jaw movement usually resolve that sensation. Operators pressurise gradually for exactly this reason.

Step 3: the session itself

Once target pressure is reached, you simply rest. In clinical HBOT you may breathe medical-grade oxygen through a mask or hood as prescribed. In wellness settings, ambient chamber air or a concentrator may be used according to manufacturer instructions.

Session length varies by protocol and setting, and should follow the manufacturer's guidance or your clinician's instructions rather than a number found online.

Step 4: decompression

At the end of the session, pressure is released gradually until the chamber returns to normal atmospheric pressure. You may again feel a mild ear sensation.

Most people can resume normal activity immediately afterwards. If you feel unwell during or after a session, stop and seek medical advice.

People also ask

Do you breathe pure oxygen inside a hyperbaric chamber?

In clinical HBOT, yes — medical-grade oxygen is delivered under a prescribed protocol. In portable wellness chambers, use follows manufacturer instructions and often involves compressed ambient air or an oxygen concentrator.

Will my ears hurt during pressurisation?

Some people notice ear fullness during compression. Slow pressurisation and simple equalisation techniques usually make it comfortable; tell the operator if it does not resolve.

What a session feels like

How long is a typical hyperbaric session?

It depends on the chamber, the setting and the protocol. Follow manufacturer guidance or the plan set by a qualified healthcare professional.
