Mild Hyperbaric Therapy vs Clinical HBOT
The most important comparison in hyperbaric research: what separates a soft-sided mild chamber from a hard-shell medical-grade system.
· Hyperbaric Wellness Guide Editorial
The short answer
A soft-sided mild hyperbaric chamber is a portable, lower-pressure enclosure typically used in wellness and home settings. A hard-shell clinical chamber delivers hyperbaric oxygen therapy at higher prescribed pressures with medical-grade oxygen under professional supervision. They differ in construction, pressure, oxygen delivery, regulation and intended purpose, and they are not medically interchangeable.

Construction and portability
Soft-sided chambers use reinforced fabric with a sealed zip and can be set up in a spare room, gym or clinic space. Many can be deflated and relocated.
Hard-shell chambers are rigid, fixed installations engineered for higher pressures and continuous clinical use, with associated infrastructure and maintenance requirements.
Pressure and oxygen delivery
Mild chambers operate at modest pressures above sea level, generally with compressed ambient air and sometimes an oxygen concentrator, following manufacturer instructions.
Clinical HBOT uses higher pressures with near-100% medical oxygen delivered by mask, hood or the chamber itself, at pressures and durations chosen by a physician for a specific indication.
Supervision and purpose
Clinical HBOT is a prescribed medical treatment for recognised indications, delivered by trained staff who screen patients beforehand and monitor them throughout.
Mild chamber use in a wellness setting is generally self-directed or facility-guided, and is best framed as part of a recovery and wellness routine. If you have a medical condition or injury, the appropriate route is a clinical evaluation, not a substitution.
How to choose which conversation you are having
- Managing a diagnosed medical condition → speak to a qualified healthcare professional about clinical HBOT.
- Building a general recovery and wellness routine → a portable chamber may be relevant, with medical screening first.
- Unsure → get medical advice before purchasing or booking anything.
People also ask
Does a home chamber provide the same benefits as a clinic?
Not necessarily. Different pressures and oxygen protocols mean outcomes studied in clinical HBOT research cannot be assumed to transfer to mild chamber use.
Home vs clinic comparison →Are soft-sided chambers safe?
Manufacturer-approved chambers used according to instructions, with proper screening, are used widely. Safety depends on the equipment, the operator and the individual's medical suitability.
Safety questions answered →Which one do athletes use?
Both appear in sport. Many athletes and teams use portable chambers for convenience, while clinical HBOT is used when a physician determines it is appropriate.
